6 dresses that describe my style

this is a trend i've been seeing going around! it evidently started on instagram, but i'm not on there because i'm allergic to most forms of social media. (tumblr is my the only 'mainstream' one i use, and even that is on thin ice lol.) i first saw this post done by strawberryteabunny, who, in turn, cited ribboncrown as inspiration, so do go check both of their blogs out :-)

the idea of the prompt is to take six dresses that you own and that really encapsulate your personal style. it was surprisingly difficult, but a lot of fun! i tried not to only pick my favorite dresses (though, of course, many made it in there!) but instead choose pieces that serve as a good sample of my whole wardrobe... if that makes sense.

the icon, the moment *_~

to get the obvious out of the way, my first pick is my chess chocolate. i love chess chocolate so much that i named my blog after it lol. it's my number one dream dress, and every day i feel sooo lucky that i have it in my favorite cut and colorway. chess chocolate has everything that i love in a dress - it's bold and sensational, it's got chocolates and little animals, a harmonious color palette with my favorite color combo, shimmery bits, an emphasis on the border print, and an unmistakable early 2010s vibe. i feel unbelievably fancy when i wear it, it's genuinely the perfect dress to me, in every color but especially this one. if i could only pick one dress to describe my wardrobe, it would be chess chocolate, easily. i could have a wardrobe of nothing but chess chocolate and i'd be happy - even as we speak im always keeping an eye out for the matching accessories and other colorways...

i haven't worn it in a while because of the warm weather, but now that it's getting cooler, i'd like to wear it again, and coordinate it more nicely than i did in april. (i'm planning to wear it for mine and my partner's anniversary later this month!)

ignore the wrinkles, i implore you...

my second pick is my shoulder ribbon JSK. i chose this dress not because it's a particular favorite, (though i do love it!) but because it perfectly encapsulates the more toned-down and comfortable style i like to wear for more mundane occasions. it's pink, it's comfortable, it's versatile, and it's modestly decorated -- these are all aspects i really like for more toned-down and/or casual lolita, and they're aspects you can find in other pieces i have. (though i think naming them counts as cheating at this challenge!) a lot of non-print or more subtle print dresses on my wishlist are also similar to this dress in these aspects.

sooo many doughnuts.

third is melty cream doughnut. this one is another dream dress that i was lucky enough to snag in my favorite cut and colorway! while chess chocolate is my favorite dress in general, i think melty cream doughnut is my favorite dress to wear. it's very comfortable and fits me well, something that can be kind of difficult to find because i'm on the bustier side. :-P it's also super easy to wash. i never have to worry about color bleeding or fading since it's a poly chiffon. looks-wise, melty cream doughnut is another example of my love for chocolate-themed prints. (i know it's not technically a chocolate dress, but it is chocolate adjacent, in my eyes. like..... it's brown, there are chocolate doughnuts, i feel like there's an argument to be made!!!) while i love a big border print, i'm also extremely partial to a very well done all-over print like this one. the vertical stripes and alternating pattern feel very intentional, not at all random. i also really, really adore the little golden charms on the waist bow. it's just the perfect cherry on top that really elevates it to a legendary status.

bunnies, strawberries, desserts, and polka dots. it's all i want!

fourth is lyrical party! is it cheating to put something i haven't worn yet? she's on the waiting list for alterations right now...

still, i chose this dress because it's a great example of all the non-chocolate dessert motifs that i like. there are only so many chocolate dresses in the world to warm my brandwhore heart, but i also really adore any dress that features baked goods. i'm a hobby baker, as well as a volunteer baker for charity, so sweets and desserts are near and dear to my heart. i also love animals and stuffed toys, and i always have, so lyrical party is the perfect combination of both of these things. delicious cupcakes with bright red strawberries, cute frosted cookies, and little living lyrical bunny plushies, not to mention, once more, that distinctly early 2010s vibe. AHHHH it's so cute... easily the best lyrical bunny dress ever put to fabric.

the honey cake you know... but a little quirky with it.

fifth, i return to chocolate-adjacent dresses with honey cake. specifically, my tokyo special set JSK. i own this dress in two different cuts and colorways, so it was an obvious shoe-in for the list, but i chose this one over my other dress for one reason -- it's kind of rare and unusual! while lolita is a fashion hobby to me, it is also a collector's hobby. for me, there's a certain thrill that comes from being able to snatch up rare or hard to find items. don't get me wrong, i buy them because i like them and like to wear them, but i do have a lot of collector's pride in many of my rarer pieces, such as this one!! so, this honey cake not only represents visuals that i like, but represents an aspect of how i like to enjoy lolita. visually, i think this is one of the cutest dresses ever made. i love how quirky it is, i love that it's baked goods themed, and i love that it's just a little bit chocolatey!! (there's chocolate syrup on it. it counts!! it counts!!!!) i also just adore the cotton strawberry-patterned lace on this release.

ah! so jolly

my sixth and final dress absolutely has to be holy night story. what a GORGEOUS dress this is -- pastel pink on jewel tones, glitter all throughout the print, gigantic cake castles, little ponies and mice, dangly golden stars... holy night story is visual perfection, and the holiday theming just makes it that much better. christmas is my very favorite holiday, and by a large margin. (sorry halloween!) dresses that i can style in that way make me absolutely giddy. while i really only wear this in the appropriate season, and it hibernates the rest of the year, i still think it serves as an excellent example of my style for the aforementioned reasons -- desserts, little animals, a big border print, shiny bits, and, of course, the absolute early 2010s of it all.

it's all early 2010s angelic pretty. but can you really blame me? that was such a fun era of the fashion. i suppose at the end of this whole list, the conclusion one might make is that my personal style largely revolves around 2010s-inspired sweet and chocolate and dessert themes.

that's my takeaway, anyway.

thanks for reading, and thank you to strawberryteabunny and ribboncrown for the inspiration. *_~
