yesterday was our comm's summer swap meet!
i've been looking forward to the swap meet since last year. we had one scheduled for january, but because of some really tough circumstances out of anyone's control, the mod team made the call to cancel it. it was a good call to protect the members and keep everyone safe - but it was very sad that we couldn't all get together that month! when they announced a swap meet for may, instead, i was over the moon and waited excitedly for the day.

i've only been involved with an in-person comm for about half a year now, so i've never been to a swap meet. i wasn't sure what to expect, but i was hopeful it would be a good time with some nice treasures to take home. a few days before the meet, some members started sharing what they were going to sell. i was particularly interested by the offerings of one lovely member -- a sweet lolita with a collection of 2010s-era treasures. among many many other things that piqued my interest, she mentioned that she was selling a sax wonder cookie jumperskirt. the dress in question is one of my dream dresses, and it's one of the only ones i haven't yet found. elated, i cheekily announced that i would be marching right over to her when the day came - not just for wonder cookie, but for about ninety percent of her offerings, too... ![]()
the day eventually came, and to be honest i was so excited i didn't get much sleep. i woke up obscenely early, killed some time, then headed out to the event. we also swung by and picked up my friend wyrm! (who made a writeup of his own.) this was going to be his first meet, which made the whole ordeal extra exciting! we survived twin cities traffic and made it inside right at the designated starting time - and it was already going pretty crazy in there.
true to my word, i made a beeline towards the lovely comm member selling that wonder cookie JSK - but i didn't see it anywhere. i sheepishly asked about it to find that... shock!! it had been sold to someone who beat me to the punch. so naturally i fell to my knees, let out a wail to the heavens, cursed the name of god and hahahaha im just kidding dude missing a sale is part of the game. wonder cookie may have evaded me this time, but the hunt for dream dresses is fun, and another chance will present itself eventually. besides - that dress is now being enjoyed by someone else in my comm, and that is *almost* as good as having it yourself. *_- ~ my disappointment lasted for all of five seconds before i realized that the money i'd set aside for this dress could now be used on other things i'd been eyeing. using copious amounts of one dollar bills (if youre reading this, i'm so sorry) i bought some other things i'd been eyeing.
after that, a comm member i'm not sure i'd met before came up to me, holding up a fuzzy bear headdress. "look, this made me think of you!" they said. "oh my god it's so cute!!!!" i blurted out way too loudly. this new acquaintance was correct, but as they headed back to their table, i found myself confused. was that a gift? if it was a gift, it probably wasn't for me -- was it for someone else? had i been mistaken for someone else? or were they looking to sell me something they (rightly) guessed i'd be into? whatever the case, my curiosity was piqued and i eventually made my way around to their table. i'm glad i did, because they had so many things that were right up my alley. it was an absolute chocolate and brown sweet overload in there. (frankly, if i wasn't being strict with my budget for the day, i likely would have bought out half their stall...) ![]()
most of my time at the meet was spent looking at... everything. there's such a huge range of styles in our comm, which is something i really love about it. there's sweets, classics, and gothics, and even within the big three, there's so much variation in everyone's personal styles. even if it wasn't in my size or style, i absolutely loved looking through all the different things people brought - and i loved seeing when another person found something that was just perfect for them. i got to chat with and catch up with many people from my comm, which was a lot of fun, and it was cool to compare and contrast our findings.
after the event was done, we went back to my friend's place to debrief and hang out for a bit. we shared our findings with each other, and our non-frilly but very supportive partners, and i dropped off an item i needed some serious help with from a better tailor than i. (foreshadowing... i'll write something about it later, because it's a saga.) he also treated me to a blueberry macaron, which was very good!! after hanging out, me and my partner headed back home and immediately changed into work clothes to do some weeding!
and then when we were done with that we passed out and died ![]()

what i sold

this dress is extremely beautiful, in my opinion it's probably one of AP's best 2020s releases, but it just was not working for me. i do really love this dress, and the star details in particular, but the color and cut just were not the vibe... it's not really as bubblegum pink as the stock photo appears, it's more of a dusty rose-ish color, which makes it really difficult to coordinate with my other pink things. my tastes have also really zeroed in on trying to do a 2010s look to the best of my ability, and happy garland, as cute as it is, doesn't slot nicely into that goal.
what i bought
the swap meet was a SMASHING success. i got several things i'm super excited about, and i don't think any one item exceeded 30 or 40 dollars. #thriftyyyyy
1 - little bear ear fur headdress (BTSSB) - this is the aforementioned headdress that was surprise presented to me! i'm pretty stoked to have some bear ears, they'll go with my bear dresses. or my brown dresses. or any coord where i'm carrying around my kumya. u_u
3 - wonder cookie bangle (AP) - i joked about this being my "wonder cookie consolation prize" but i am way more excited about it than that. AP's old bangles are sooo iconic to me and i'm delighted to have one. it makes an excellent addition to my slowly-growing 2010s wardrobe.

1 - melty ribbon chocolate OTKs (AP) - i really love AP's sock designs that have chocolate on the feet. i just think they're super cute, and i'm happy to have three of those designs now! i saw them in a small bin under someone's table and initially thought that they were someone's personal find. i'm glad i asked them, though, because they totally were for sale and they'd just forgotten a tag. i think these are the 2014 versions but i could be wrong.
1 - pop bear short sleeve parka (AP) - a super cute old AP parka i got for a really good price because it's missing the neck bow. not really an issue for me because i largely want to style this as an open hoodie! it's super cute and in pretty perfect condition besides that. i'm glad the seller pointed it out to me while i was looking at their other things, it was a bit tucked away and i wouldn't have seen it otherwise!
in conclusion
this swap meet ruled. i'm already excited for the next time we have one, which i'm guessing will be in 6 months to a year-ish? i'm super excited to coordinate the things i've gotten, i've been generally in need of more non-main piece items to flesh out my wardrobe and give it more cohesion and variety.
